Laparoscopic Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy)

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy removes a diseased gallbladder through a few small (keyhole) incisions. It is the established treatment for symptomatic gallstones.

Dr. Babu Elangovan performs it as routine day-care or short-stay surgery, with most patients home within a day.

What the Operation Involves

Under general anaesthesia, the gallbladder is removed through small incisions using a camera and fine instruments.

If a stone has passed into the bile duct, it is usually cleared endoscopically (by ERCP) before or after the gallbladder is removed.

Recovery

Most patients go home the same day or the next day and return to normal activity within a week or two.

You can live normally without a gallbladder — bile flows directly from the liver to the gut and most people eat normally afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is gallbladder removal day-care surgery?

For most patients, yes. Keyhole gallbladder removal is commonly done as day-care or short-stay surgery, with a return to normal activity within a week or two.

Can I live without a gallbladder?

Yes. The gallbladder is not essential. After removal, bile flows directly from the liver to the gut and most people eat normally. A few notice temporary changes in digestion that usually settle.

What if a stone is in the bile duct?

A stone in the bile duct is usually cleared endoscopically by ERCP, before or after the gallbladder is removed, to prevent jaundice and infection.

How soon can I return to work?

Many people return to light work within a week and fuller activity within two to three weeks, depending on their job and recovery.

Is the surgery painful?

Keyhole surgery causes much less pain than open surgery. Mild discomfort and shoulder-tip pain (from the gas used) settle within a few days with simple pain relief.

How much does gallbladder surgery cost in Chennai?

Cost depends on the hospital, room category and whether bile-duct clearance is needed. We give a clear estimate at consultation, and the surgery is usually covered by health insurance.
