Upper & Lower GI Endoscopy in Chennai

Endoscopy uses a thin, flexible camera to look directly inside the digestive tract — so problems can be diagnosed, biopsied and often treated without open surgery.

Dr. Babu Elangovan performs upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy) to examine the food pipe, stomach and duodenum, and colonoscopy to examine the large bowel, for assessment, cancer screening and therapeutic procedures.

Upper GI Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)

Gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It is used to investigate reflux, swallowing difficulty, indigestion, ulcers and bleeding, and to take biopsies. Therapeutic steps such as stopping bleeding, dilating narrowings or placing stents can also be done.

Colonoscopy (Lower GI Endoscopy)

Colonoscopy examines the entire large bowel. It is used to investigate bleeding, a change in bowel habit and anaemia, and is the key test for bowel-cancer screening. Polyps — small growths that can become cancer — can be removed during the same procedure (polypectomy).

Frequently asked questions

What is GI endoscopy?

GI endoscopy uses a thin flexible camera to look inside the digestive tract. Upper endoscopy (gastroscopy) examines the food pipe, stomach and duodenum; colonoscopy examines the large bowel. Both allow diagnosis, biopsy and treatment without open surgery.

Is endoscopy painful?

Endoscopy is generally well tolerated. Gastroscopy is done with throat numbing and often light sedation; colonoscopy is usually done under sedation. Most people feel little or no pain and recover quickly afterwards.

Why might I need a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is used to investigate rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habit, anaemia or abdominal symptoms, and for bowel-cancer screening. Polyps that could become cancer can be removed during the same procedure.

Can polyps be removed during colonoscopy?

Yes. Polyps found during colonoscopy can usually be removed in the same procedure (polypectomy) and sent for analysis. Removing polyps helps prevent bowel cancer.

How should I prepare for an endoscopy?

For gastroscopy you fast for several hours beforehand. For colonoscopy you take a bowel-cleansing preparation the day before so the bowel is clear. You will be given detailed instructions when the test is booked.

Can treatment be done during endoscopy?

Yes. As well as diagnosis and biopsy, endoscopy allows therapeutic procedures such as removing polyps, stopping bleeding, dilating narrowings and placing stents, avoiding the need for open surgery in many cases.
